Dev had spent twenty years telling people he was too tall for the swing park, so when the reunion committee asked for a volunteer to ride the old school mascot down the hall at the Sunday do, he said yes before anyone could check the forms. The mascot was a plush green dinosaur named Pip, stuffed into a rugby shirt, and it had been in the caretaker's cupboard since 1998.

Halfway down the sports hall the Velcro gave out. Pip's head flopped sideways, and the whole committee gasped as if someone had sat on the buffet. Dev didn't stop. He grabbed the handlebars of the trolley, let out a whoop, and steered straight at the trophy table, where Mrs Okafor, the former head of maths, was holding a raffle drum like a shield.

She didn't flinch. She simply lifted her chin, the way she used to when Year Nine tried to hide a catapult, and said, "Gino Marrow, you still owe me a protractor."

He raised two fingers in a peace sign, the only thing he had ever got right in detention. "Keep the change, miss."

Somebody's phone flashed. By the time the fire alarm was pulled, the photo was already on the year group chat under the caption: best thing to come out of 4B. Dev read it in the car park, laughing until he had to lean on the bonnet, and realised he was quite glad of the excuse to go back for that protractor.
