Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The shutter on the old Olympus had been stuck since Tuesday, and Mr Halloran had carried it in wrapped in a tea towel as though it were a sleeping cat. It was gone half eleven. "There's no film in it," I said. "Hasn't been since before you were born, I should think." He laughed, which I didn't expect. His daughter had bought him a digital one for his birthday, he said, and he couldn't bear how it showed him every picture before it had properly happened. This one made him wait. He wanted it working so he could go out and take the one photograph he'd been putting off, a single frame of the canal at night, where the lamps doubled in the black water.

I freed the shutter with a drop of oil and a bit of patience, and it snapped clean on the bench. I loaded a roll of Tri-X from the drawer under the till. He paid in coppers and counted them twice, then walked out into the rain with the strap looped over his wrist.

After I'd drawn the grille, I stood at the window. He was across the road under the streetlamp, the camera lifted to his eye, and the lens was turned towards the shop, towards me. I heard the click through the glass, or believed I did. I stood very still and let him have the frame.
