Outline camera tattoo on skin
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo of a camera sits in the centre of the frame, showing a rectangular body, a raised viewfinder bump, a small flash or button, and a large circular lens. The linework is thin, even and dark, with no shading or fill. The image is black and grey, set against soft, pale skin with a dark edge of the body visible on the left.

The bride's mother wanted the lens cap off before the vows, and Tomas Vesey would not take it off. He had carried the box camera up from Kell wrapped in wet straw, two sheep's worth of debt strapped to his back, and he set its three legs on the church path with the care of a man laying down a sleeping child.

Everyone said the camera was a fool's toy. The priest said it, and the baker, and the widow who had lost her husband in the spring and wanted his face kept. Tomas only answered that a lens sees what is in front of it and nothing more, and that was why he kept it covered until the people were ready to be seen. They laughed. The bride, Ilse, did not laugh. She stood in the doorway with the rain behind her and asked him to show her what it saw.
He opened the cap. Through the small round glass, upside down and very clear, the church door stood open with the whole village crowded inside it, and in the middle of them a bride holding her veil in both fists. He had not meant to show anyone. Ilse looked for a long time, then turned the image toward her mother, who wept, and then toward the widow, who stopped asking for her husband's face.
Tomas packed the camera that evening and walked down to Kell with the straw still wet. The sheep were paid. Nobody in the village asked him for a picture again, and nobody needed one, because they had seen themselves once, upside down and whole, and that was enough to keep.
