Virgo symbol and moon with stars

Mixed · Photo

The tattoo combines a bold black Virgo zodiac glyph with a crescent moon whose inner curve forms a woman's profile with flowing, wavy hair. Shading in lilac and purple with grey detail gives the hair movement, while the glyph and star outlines are solid black. Small dots and two outlined stars sit to the left, arranged as a loose scatter across plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The almanac said the maiden would climb over the south skerry by the first week of September, but on Hebble she always came early, because the sea fog lifted the horizon like a lid. My father taught me to find her from the kitchen window, the three-pronged mark of her sheaf pinned low, and the moon, when it came, bent round her like a hand cupping a candle.

The summer Tom Garrow's boat went out past the Ness and did not come back, I kept the star log on the back of the tide tables. I drew two stars with care, because they were the ones my mother had named, and the rest I dotted in as the wind counted them off: one dot for each clear night, one for each night the glass fell. Mrs Penhale from the shop said it was morbid. She said a girl should be stitching something.

By October I had filled four pages. The moon thinned to a sliver, and the hair of the woman in it seemed to stream west toward the sea, the way hair does when someone leans out of a window to shout. I stopped asking the almanac questions it could not answer. I read the dots instead, that loose scatter that never lined up with anything, and found they made a shape anyway.

The boat came in on the last Thursday of the month, low in the water, with Tom sitting in the stern wrapped in a sail and laughing at nothing. I did not say anything clever. I took the slate from its nail, wrote the date beside the last dot, and drew the moon full again, its face turned to the harbour where it could see us.
