Shut the door properly, Tom, or the snow will come in and sit on the settle with us. Right, where was I? Ah, the Hollin Pass, and the woman who kept the Crown and Lantern the winter the road was shut for a month. Her name was Maud Ferrier, and the carriers swore she had a tail on her like a scorpion's, though nobody ever saw it, for she kept it under her coat.

Don't look at me like that, I'm getting to the flowers. Every winter the snow came down off the tops in long black curls, like ink poured into milk, and every spring it left a few blooms in the yard, orange as a fox and blue as a jay's egg. Maud pressed them between the pages of her ledger, so every guest's debt was wrapped in petals, and she never once forgot who owed her.

One February a surveyor came up with a brass compass and a letter claiming a bed by law. He wanted the old mine road reopened, and Maud wanted nothing of the sort, because that road ran beneath the crags where the flood had left its dead. She sat him by the fire, poured him a dram, and said he could have the bed for as long as he stood still while she counted to a hundred. He lasted forty-one. When he finally moved, the compass had frozen to his palm, and its needle was pointing straight down into the mine, and somewhere under the snow, something began to count back.
