Volkswagen camper van on thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the front of a Volkswagen camper van with a rounded windscreen, round headlights and a split windscreen frame. The van body is filled in with red-brown tones and grey shading that gives it a rounded, metallic look. It sits on the side of the thigh, with the photograph taken at a slight angle under a warm, faded filter.

Dear Tom, the van is sitting in the yard behind the Coach and Horses in Kendal with its nose against the wall, and Mr Pratt says the gearbox is finished. I've been on the step for an hour with a flask of tea going cold, trying to work out how Dad would have put it. He'd have said the old girl had a good run, and then he'd have gone to find a spanner.

I keep seeing her the way she was on the Cornish road that summer, the split windscreen with its chrome bar catching the sun, the round headlamps looking perpetually surprised. Dad mixed that red himself in the garage on Harrow Lane, the colour of a conker just prised out of its case, and he never once managed to get the same shade twice when he touched her up. You remember the chamois he kept folded on the dashboard. It's still there, stiff as card now.

Pratt offered a price for scrap this morning, which was fair, and then went quiet when I showed him the glovebox. Under the handbook was a road atlas with pencil rings drawn round half of Hadrian's Wall, and a note in Dad's square capitals: DO THIS BEFORE THE RUST DOES. I suppose he meant the van, but I've decided he meant us.

So I'm leaving the keys with Pratt and taking the bus to Bowness on Saturday. Come up at Easter. We'll walk the wall on foot, the way he wanted, since the van has finally stopped asking us to drive it there. Bring the chamois. I'll bring the atlas.
