Wanderlust globe and flowers flash design

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink outline drawing of a globe with a curved banner reading WANDERLUST, framed by open flowers and leaves. The bold, even linework is filled with a pale tan wash that marks the continents and shading. The design is centred on a sheet of tracing paper, with a pen lying across the lower right corner.

The kettle has boiled dry twice before you think to check the chart on the saloon wall. Mum's pencil dots still run along the Grand Union, a route she marked the winter before she sold the house in Leeds. You have been following those dots for nine weeks. Today the towpath is lined with cow parsley, and a heron stands in the shallows as if it has been paid to wait.

At Braunston you tie up and walk into the village for bread. A woman outside the chandlery asks where you're headed. You say you don't know, which is true, and she laughs and tells you the globe painted above her door was done by someone who never left Northamptonshire. You buy a loaf and a faded world map pinned by the till, its oceans gone the colour of weak tea, and carry both back down the lane as if they weigh the same.

That evening you spread the map across the table, weighting its corners with the tea tin, the marmalade and the spare windlass. Your finger finds the Atlantic, then the Cape, then a thin blue line with a flower doodled beside it. Mum drew flowers in every margin. You trace one with your thumbnail while a passing boat sends its wash slapping against the hull.

In the morning you slip the ropes and turn the bow north instead of south. The Trent is closer than the chart let on. You steer with one hand, the kettle already whistling, and let the flowers in the margins decide the rest.
