Wanderlust lettering on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close black and white photograph of a hand with the word wanderlust followed by a full stop tattooed across the inner wrist. The letters are set in a typewriter-style serif font, spaced apart, and rendered in solid black ink with crisp edges. The soft grey background and the dark polish on the fingernails keep the focus on the wrist.

The Kittiwake came in past the breakwater at six with her hold sagging on the port side, and I was still at the wheelhouse table with Mam's Olympia on my knees, trying to get one word down before the gulls had the lot. The e stuck. It always stuck. I wiped the bar with my thumbnail and pressed again, and the letter came up black and crisp on the carbon.

Nell had written from Ullapool asking if I was ever coming home for more than a fortnight, and I had nothing to say to her that didn't sound like a postcard from somewhere I wasn't. So I typed the one word I had, a space between each letter because that is how the machine wanted it, the carriage ticking across like a tide going out: w a n d e r l u s t. Angus leaned in over my shoulder, smelling of diesel and cigarettes, and read it upside down.
'That's no' a word for a letter,' he said. 'That's a word for a man who's never home.' I told him it was for Nell. He shrugged and went back to his ropes, and I sat there a long time with the last stroke still to make.
I put the full stop in hard enough to dent the platen. Then I folded the page into the envelope, licked it, and walked it up the quay to the post box by the fish market, where the gulls were already fighting over the morning's offcuts. It went in with a small, final sound, and I stood there listening to it fall.
