Wanderlust lettering on the inner wrist
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand raised against a dark, blurred background, showing the word wanderlust in small lowercase serif letters on the inner wrist. The letters are crisp, dark and evenly weighted, with a typewriter-like character. The image is monochrome, so the composition centres the wrist and the lettering with soft shadow around the edges.

The timetable board at Carrow Junction has been wrong since Tuesday, and you are the only one in the booking hall who has noticed. You stand at the ticket window with a pencil behind your ear and the stationmaster's black upright typewriter in front of you, its e sticking, and you type the same word over and over on the back of a spoiled form because it is the only thing you are allowed to type that is not a fare.

Wanderlust. The lower case keeps jamming on the l, so the word comes out with a little hitch in it, as if it has stopped to look back at the platform. Mrs Hale asks for a single to Penzance and you hand her the change without looking up, because looking up means seeing the 4.10 pull out with nobody on it but the guard, and you have been counting those departures since March.
Your brother's postcard is tucked under the glass of the counter. Lisbon, it says, in his square capitals, the sea is the colour of ink and the ink is the colour of nothing. You have read it so often the corners have softened like cloth.
On Friday the typewriter goes quiet and you do not stop typing. You sit with your fingers resting on the keys, pressing down on nothing, and the word stays on the page in faint grey shadow, and the next train comes in on time for once. You pick up the form, fold it twice, and slide it into your coat pocket. Then you take the ticket for Lisbon from the drawer, the one nobody bought, and you walk out onto the platform with the wind coming off the moor.
