Dreamcatcher and birds on a wrist
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a hanging feather and two small birds sit beside the word Wanderlust in a flowing script on the inside of a wrist. The linework is dark and fairly clean, with light grey shading in the feathers and the web of the dreamcatcher. The design is placed diagonally across the wrist against a plain, warm-toned background.

The fiddler at Corran Hall played every Saturday until the lamps guttered, and every Saturday Nell Barrow hung a loop of willow in the rafters above the stage, strung with waxed thread and a single grey feather from the gull that nested on the chimney. Her mother said it would catch nothing but dust. Nell said it was for the dreams that came in late, the ones that wanted to be somewhere else.

One night in October a sailor came in off the Bristol boat with salt in his collar and a tune nobody knew. He danced with her twice without speaking. On the third turn he said the sea had told him the feather was a map, and that anyone who slept under a web like hers would wake facing whichever way the birds had flown. Nell laughed and told him the birds only flew south because they were tired of the north.
When the hall emptied she climbed onto the stage and looked up. Two swallows had come in through the broken pane and were circling the willow, weaving between its threads without catching a single one. She watched them until the fiddler packed his case and the lamps went out one by one.
In the morning the feather was gone from the rafter, and the web hung loose and open. Nell took her boots, her mother's shawl, and the sailor's map, which was only a drawing of the coast on the back of a tide table. She left the hall door unlatched behind her, so the next dreams could find their way in.
