Fine line black tattoo of a dreamcatcher, two feathers and three birds with the word Wanderlust in script, on the wrist.

Dreamcatcher and wanderlust script on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand with red painted nails is raised toward the camera, showing a tattoo on the wrist. The design combines a dreamcatcher with a hanging feather and two feathers, three small birds, and the word Wanderlust written in cursive script across the dreamcatcher. The linework is thin and grey-black with light shading in the feathers, and the image is set against a plain dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The house martins had already gone south when my grandfather handed me the tiller at Sowerby lock, though he kept one hand on the brass rail as if the boat might bolt without him. The Tern was painted green along her cabin side, and he had never once let anyone call her a pretty boat. She was a working boat, he said, and working boats kept their dreams to themselves.

He had hung a dreamcatcher from the hatch hook, a cheap thing from a market stall in Stratford, its web gone slack with damp and a single grey feather tied to its bottom loop. Every night he said it caught the bad dreams and let the good ones fall through the hoop onto the boat. Every morning I unhooked it, shook out the grit from the towpath, and hung it back up because he asked me to, and because I liked the way it turned in the wind off the water.

He did not wake one February at Tewkesbury, and the hoop hung still for a week before I could bring myself to touch it. In April I took the Tern on alone, past lock keepers who looked over my shoulder for the crew. At the Severn junction three small birds lifted off the weir and wheeled once above the cabin roof before turning north. I tied the dreamcatcher to the tiller bar instead of the hatch, where it could swing out over the wake. Whatever it caught, I let the rest of it go down the river.
