Small black typewriter-style lettering reading wanderlust across the inner wrist of a raised hand with dark nail polish.

Wanderlust lettering on a wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised hand shows a single word, wanderlust, tattooed in small black serif-style capitals and lowercase letters across the inner wrist. The linework is crisp and solid with no visible shading, and the lettering runs horizontally with a full stop at the end. The background is softly blurred in grey, blue and yellow tones, which keeps the focus on the wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Harriet Oakes had kept the left-luggage counter at Carrow Pier for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody had claimed the brown case on the top shelf. It had a typewriter inside, wrapped in a tablecloth, and a ticket paid a year ahead in a hand she did not recognise. Each spring the ticket was renewed by post, and each spring she stamped it, dusted the case and put it back.

This March the boat was late and the wind came off the harbour like a knife. A young man stood at the counter with his collar up and asked whether anything had been left for a Mr Teague. She told him no, and then, because he looked so cold, she told him about the case. He did not want it. He only wanted to know that somebody had kept it.

That night she lifted the tablecloth and found a single strip of paper rolled into the platen, the ink gone brown. Someone had typed one word on it and struck a full stop so hard the paper had torn. Wanderlust. Under it, in pencil, a list of ports she had never seen, each one crossed through.

She sat with the lamp until the lighthouse had turned a dozen times. Then she fed a fresh sheet into the machine and typed, slowly, with two fingers, Gone to see the sea at Corran. She put the card in her coat, walked down to the post box in the rain, and posted it before she could change her mind.
