Heart-shaped city skyline on a thigh
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A heart outline frames a black-and-grey city skyline with a tall spire-topped tower at its centre and rows of windowed buildings across the base. The heart is filled with a soft orange-to-red gradient that suggests a sunset behind the buildings. The shading is smooth and blended, with the skyline in solid dark tones and the sky in layered warm colour, centred on the upper thigh.

Dessie had painted the skyline on the back wall of the Ferry Café three times before Mrs Abney agreed it looked like the right city. The first version had the spire too squat. The second put the sun behind the wrong tower, so it set over the river instead of the gap between the blocks. She stood in the kitchen doorway with a mug of stewed tea and watched him work the third one with a brush no thicker than a darning needle.

"You're fussing," she said. "Nobody looks at the back wall."
"Somebody does. Someone always looks up on the way out, once they've paid and they're pretending they're not sorry to leave."
He had a paper napkin folded in his back pocket, soft at the creases. Ruth had drawn on it the night before she left for the hospital job up north: a heart, and inside the heart the same jagged line of towers he could see from the window of their flat every morning. She had said it was a daft thing to carry about. He had said it was the only map he needed.
When the last window was lit and the sky was filled in, orange at the bottom and red at the top, he propped the back door open so the evening could come in. The light crossed the lino and climbed the wall, sitting inside the heart as if it had always been there. He took a photograph on his phone and sent it to a number he had not dialled in months, with two words underneath: Still here.
