The owl had been sitting on the wheelhouse roof since before the lock keeper came off his shift, and Dad said it was waiting for the coal barge to clear so it could take the mice from the hold. I didn't believe him. Owls don't wait for anything. They just stare at you with those orange eyes until you feel rude for having a face.

We were moored below Bramley Lock on the Calder, the water the colour of stewed tea, and the wash from the trains slapped over the bank every twenty minutes. Mum had painted the cabin roof green the summer before the flood, and the paint had gone to ghosts since. Dad was working out the price of diesel against the price of a new fender when the owl dropped off the roof edge without a sound and landed on the tiller bar.

It held something small in its feet, a vole maybe, and looked at my father the way he looked at the bank manager. Then it lifted, and where it had been perched the wood was beaded with spray and streaked with oil that threw back blue and pink in the lamplight. I said it was a sign. Dad said I'd been reading too many of Nan's postcards. We went down the cut at first light with the lamps still burning.

Three weeks later the owl was on the bow in teal and violet, the colours bleeding the way the river did after rain, and Dad would not say who had painted it. Some nights I still hear wings above the hatch, and I leave a crust out on the step, because whatever keeps a boat company is owed its supper.
