Watercolour owl on a branch

Back · Colour · Photo

A cartoon owl with large round eyes sits on a thin branch with small leaves. Black linework outlines the owl and branch, while the eyes, beak and surrounding splashes of teal, purple and green are softly blended like watercolour. The owl is centred on the skin, with the colour washes spreading out behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The owl had kept to the same willow bough above Tench Lock since the floods, and Nell Preece had stopped pretending it was chance. Each evening, when the Mary Ellen nosed round the bend with her cabin lamp lit, the bird turned its great round eyes on the wheelhouse and held them there until the boat was through. Her father called it a watcher. He said an owl on the cut meant somebody was coming home, or somebody had gone in, and he never could tell which until the lock was behind him.

Nell kept a ledger of such things in pencil, the way her father had taught her, with the date, the weather and the colour of the water. The river had gone the green of old bottle glass after the rain, and the sky over Standish Meadow turned violet at six each evening, the shade of the bruise on her father's wrist when the gate chain slipped last winter. She wrote down the owl every night and underlined it twice.

On the ninth night of October the top gate jammed with a fallen limb wedged against the balance beam, and her father, laid up with his knee, could only shout from the towpath. Nell climbed the ladder in the dark with a hooked pole and a lantern that kept guttering. The owl dropped from the bough and settled on the paddle gear a yard from her hand, its feathers the colour of wet bark. It did not fly off. She worked the branch loose while it watched, and when the gate groaned open the bird lifted, unhurried, into the dusk over the meadow.

In the morning the bough above the lock was bare. Nell took the ledger out to the towpath and wrote the entry the way she always did: date, weather, water. Then, beneath the double underline, she pressed a single green leaf from the fallen limb between the pages and wrote, gate clear, owl gone home.
