Puppet band across the upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo of a group of puppet characters playing guitars and a horn, set against a light blue background. The puppets are drawn with bold outlines and soft shading, with bright orange, purple, yellow and green tones throughout. The figures fill the upper arm and shoulder, with the lower-left horn and the red guitar framing the composition.

Dear Nell, you'll not believe the week I've had. The Lost Property Five, as they call themselves on the posters, had their van die outside Tewkesbury services on Tuesday, and I was the only one with a torch and a working phone charger. The fellow with the horn, Bartholomew Pickle, a blue chap in a purple hat and tinted specs he never takes off, spent two hours trying to fix the alternator with a kazoo for a screwdriver.

Their lead singer, a shaggy orange thing called Mungo Stroud, insisted the van had a personality and needed reasoning with. So we reasoned. Mungo sang it a ballad about rust. The guitarist, who is green and wears a hat like an upturned cake tin, wept into his strings because the gig in Cheltenham was sold out and the hall was waiting on them.

By dawn the van was still dead, but Pickle had taught me the chorus of a song about lay-bys, and I'd taught him to say the word properly. Mungo reckoned the crowd would forgive a late start if we opened with something slow. We finally rolled up at ten past eight, the horn held together with gaffer tape and the red guitar wrapped in a blanket against the drizzle.

They played to forty people and a spaniel. Best gig I've ever seen, and I've watched them mislay their own instruments in three counties. Write back and tell me the kids are behaving, and give Dad my love, even if he hasn't earned it.
