Watercolour-style girl in blue dress on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A full-length figure seen from behind, with long blonde hair and a flowing blue dress. The figure is drawn in thin black linework, with loose yellow and blue washes of colour that spread beyond the outline and fade into splatter at the hem. The design sits centrally on a limb against a plain white background.

The fair came to Cold Ashby the week the river went down, on three flatbed lorries and a caravan with a painted sign nobody could read because the rain had taken the letters. Its owner was a man called Tobias Quill, who kept his coins in a tin and his promises in a ledger, and who would sell a child a toffee apple on credit but never a second one.

Mabel Penrose came to the fair on the last night, when the lamps were already guttering and the ground was churned to mud. She wore a blue cotton dress her grandmother had dyed in a copper pot, and her yellow hair kept lifting off her shoulders in the wind. She wanted only to see the hall of mirrors, and Quill let her in for nothing because she told him she had come to count the reflections of the moon.
Inside, every mirror showed her back. In each one she was walking away, and in each one the dress was a little bluer, as though the colour had been spilling out of her hem and into the glass. When she turned to face the door, the glass was empty, and a small wet stain of blue lay on the boards where she had stood.
Quill found the blue on his own sleeve the next morning and could not wash it out. The fair left before the week was out, and the village swore that on still evenings you could see a girl in a blue dress walking the far bank of the river, always with her back to the town, never once looking round to see who was calling her name.
