Cartoon fairy in a yellow dress

Other · Colour · Photo

A chibi-style fairy with a yellow hair bun, large pointed ears and grey-outlined wings stands with her hands clasped in front of a yellow, frilled dress. The design uses fine black outlines with flat yellow fills, small pale shading on the wings and a pink tint on the shoes and skin areas. The fairy sits centrally on smooth skin against a plain, light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pell had been told that the gulls on Scarrow Island were dim, so she did not expect the one on the chapel roof to argue with her about the lamp. 'It's my perch,' it screamed, and Pell folded her arms across her yellow frilled skirt and gave it the look she had perfected on the mainland.

The island had been without a fairy for forty years. Old Mrs Harrow, who kept the bird book at the post office, had written it down in pencil: no fairy, no luck, no proper spring. So when Pell came off the ferry with a satchel of sugar lumps and a bun of gold hair pinned up with a ribbon that kept slipping, the islanders made a fuss. They gave her a room above the bakery and asked her to fix the weather.

She could not fix the weather. She could fix the lamp, though, which had gone dark in the March storms because the wick had rotted and nobody had dared climb the lighthouse since the Dunmore boy fell. Pell climbed it every evening, wings dragging on the iron rungs, and sat on the sill counting ships aloud until the sea gave up its last boat.

On the forty-first night the gulls stopped shrieking and the lamp caught. Pell hung from the rail with one hand, the other clutching her ribbon, and watched the beam sweep across the water. Below, a small light answered from the harbour, then another, then a row of kitchen windows. Mrs Harrow was waving a tea towel. Pell waved back, and the gull, sulking on the chapel roof, finally flew off to find a quieter island.
