Watercolour-style lotus flower on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A lotus flower with several layered petals is outlined in black linework. The petals are filled with soft, blended washes of teal, green, lilac, pink and blue, with faint spatter around the edges that gives a watercolour effect. The flower is centred on bare skin, with a blue checked fabric visible along the bottom edge of the frame.

Dear Nell, The 7.14 was late again, so I had time to watch a woman on platform four trying to dry a painting in the wind. She had it propped against the bench with one shoe on its corner, and every time a train thundered through, the paper lifted as if it wanted to leave. Five petals, washed in wet teal and lilac and a soft pink that bled into the blue, then gone over with a fine black pen so the colour seemed to spill past the lines. I thought of you, because you always said colour should never sit politely inside a line.

She caught me looking and asked if I knew what a lotus was supposed to mean. I said I didn't, and she said it grows up out of mud and opens clean every morning, which struck me as a bit much for a Tuesday. Then she laughed, flicked a spatter of green off her thumb onto the pavement and said it was only a flower she'd wanted to get right for years, and she'd finally stopped being frightened of ruining it.
When her train came she left the painting on the bench. I've tucked it behind the tea urn in case she comes back. Mrs Abbott from the ticket office says I should post it to the lost property office in Leeds, but I don't think it's lost. I think she meant to leave it here, where the light comes in sideways through the glass and the colours look wetter than they are.
Write when you can. Tell me Lisbon is as loud as everyone says.
Love, Tom
