Waterfall landscape in a diamond on a shoulder blade
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A diamond-framed scene shows a waterfall falling over rocks, with pine trees, scattered stars and a rocky hillside. Pine branches with cones sit to the left and right, and a cut log lies below the diamond, all linked by fine dotted lines. The work is built from stippled dots and fine lines in black ink and grey tones, with no colour.

The thaw came late to the valley that year, and the miller's daughter went up the pass alone with a sack of salt and a promise to her aunt. The snow lay to her knees on the north side, and the pines stood black against a sky with more stars in it than she had ever seen over the mill. Where the path bent around a shelf of grey stone, she heard the falls before she saw them, a long pour of water over the rocks that had no business running in January.

The innkeeper at the top, a widow named Orla Breck, had told her the water never froze because it fell from the old cut in the mountain, where a log had been driven across the gap a hundred winters back and had never come loose. Nobody had dared move it. Orla said the log held the lake up the way a hand holds a cup, and that if you wanted the spring to come you climbed up and asked the pines to let it go.
The girl did not ask. She looked for the cones instead, the way her aunt had taught her, and found them heavy on the branches by the water, each one closed tight against the cold. She broke one free and held it to the light. Inside, a single seed was waiting, dark and patient as a question.
She carried it down the pass in her mitten. At the mill, she pressed it into the cold ground under the wall where the sun would reach first, and went inside to warm her hands. By April the falls were roaring, and the innkeeper's letter came up the valley with nothing in it but a sketch of a pine and a single word, which the girl understood at once: enough.
