Wave line tattoo on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with long light hair is seen from behind, showing her bare back above a red open-back top. A rectangular block of stacked, wavy black lines sits on her upper back, near the shoulder blade. The fine linework is shaded in black and grey against smooth skin, with a soft, neutral background.

The chart came off the printer at four in the morning, the way they always did: a rectangle of ink stacked row on row, like the pages of a book somebody had left out in the rain. I had watched the feed for nine nights before I believed it was a pulse and not the cable humming against the mast. Every ninety-one seconds a thin hill rose out of the noise and slid back down.

I told nobody at the station but the tea urn. Hollis, the old director, had gone to Llandudno with a bad knee and a box of logbooks he would not let anyone touch, and the new men from the university wanted their own names on everything. So I pinned the printout inside my locker and studied it on my breaks, tracing the lines with a biro, counting how the peaks grew taller towards the middle and then flattened like breath going out.

On my last night before the contract ended, the signal changed. The waves bunched and leaned together and stopped in one clean block, as if something on the far side of the sky had decided to hold still and be looked at. I sat there until dawn with the printer ticking and the valley going grey at the edges. Nobody out there was trying to speak to me. They were only keeping time, the way a heart does, and I was simply the one awake to hear it.

I wrote the time in the margin in Hollis's careful hand, switched off the lamp, and walked down the hill to the bus with the chart folded in my coat.
