Wave tattoo on upper chest
Chest · Mixed · Photo
A single curling wave motif sits on the upper chest, close to the collarbone. The design uses a thick black outline with blue filling the inner sections, and the tapered ends sweep out to a fine point. The skin is lit warmly against a plain background, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

The stockpot had started to walk across the hob again, so Dessa Coyle braced a hip against the rail and let it. Outside the porthole the Humber sea was the colour of wet slate, and the Ardent Lark rolled into each swell with the slow patience of a cow lying down. Forty-one years at sea had taught her the difference between a wave that wanted the ship and one that only wanted a look at her. This one was the second kind.

Her second cook, a lad from Grimsby called Teddy Ashby, came in with the bread tray held out in front of him like an offering. "Skipper says we've a gale by six," he said. "Says it's coming round behind us."
"Let it come round." She took the tray and slid it onto the rack. "Tell him the custard's set and the tins are lashed, and he can stop sending boys down to ask."
Teddy grinned and went. Dessa stood a while longer with her palm flat on the bulkhead, feeling the hull hum. Her mother had told her that the sea never struck a true wave twice in the same place, that it only borrowed the shape from the last one and carried it on. Dessa had never believed that until she watched the swell lift the ship, lean, and then curl away under the bow in a long blue line, tapered to a point like a brushstroke lifted too soon.
When the gale came at six she was ready, kettle lashed, bread safe, and the stockpot cold. She chalked a small curling mark on the galley wall beside the clock, the way her mother had marked her own voyages, and went up to the deck with the wind in her face.
