Waves and crescent moon in a circle on an ankle
Dotwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A circular design shows stylised waves with curling crests in the foreground and a crescent moon set in a stippled sky. The waves are built from fine dark linework and the sky and background are shaded with dense dots, giving a monochrome, engraved look. The circle frames the design neatly on the ankle, with the foot and a blurred background visible around it.

The tide tables had been pinned to the wheelhouse wall since Easter, and Mr Okonedo had drawn a small ring around the Thursday with the stub of a carpenter's pencil. Nobody asked him what it meant. The boats of Porthkerris did not ask questions of a man who could read the sea from a window the way other men read the football.

He had come down from Hull with a sack of engraving tools and a box of Indian ink, and a reputation that had preceded him by two years. He cut woodblocks for the almanac printers in the winter and mended nets in the summer. The nets came to him in grey heaps, knotted by storms, and he untangled them with a patience that the younger men found unnerving. A net, he told them, was only a sea that had been asked to stay still.
On the Thursday the swell came round the Mouse rock, long and low, and the crescent moon hung pale above the headland like a paring left on a board. Tomas Vey, who had never once been wrong about weather, stood at the bow and said nothing. Then he said, very quietly, that the crests were standing up too neatly, the way they did in a print before someone had gone over them with a finer line.
They brought the boats in by hand, one after another, the cold water breaking in curls that shone like cut silver. When the last hull was on the slip, Okonedo took the pencil from behind his ear and drew one more ring on the tide table, around the Thursday, and wrote beside it in neat capitals: ALL IN.
