Dear Ada, the lamp has been wrong since Tuesday, and I've told Mr Pollard twice that a lamp does not care what the tide thinks of it, but he insists on a new wick, and a new wick is what I've been waiting on since the supply boat came back empty. So I climb the stairs each night and trim the old one myself.

Last Thursday, with the glass clean and the sea gone the colour of pewter, a cat came up the rocks from the south path. Ginger once, I'd guess, though the wet had made him the colour of stewed tea. He sat on the landing rail and looked at me the way the inspector looks at a ledger. Then he grinned. Not a cat's grin, Ada, but the sort you see on a painted sign, a long crescent that stayed on after the rest of his face had gone. I said good evening. He said nothing, which I took as agreement.
I wrote it in the log, of course, under the weather. Tides, wind south-west, one cat, grinning. Pollard read it and laughed until he had to sit down, then told me the old keepers used to say that grin was the only thing on this coast that could see the lamp working. I asked him what it meant. He said we were all mad here, and that was why we kept the light on.
Tonight the grin came back, rising over the headland like a sliver of moon, and I swear the beam swung round to meet it. The new wick arrives on Friday. I shan't tell Pollard I've grown fond of the thing. Write soon, and tell me whether the cats in Bristol grin too.
