Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of the top of a bare foot on a red fabric background. The words "We're All Mad Here" are written in dark blue-black script lettering, with the word "All" set in a looped, decorative form. Beside the lettering, a grinning Cheshire Cat in pink and purple with striped and shaded details sits on the outer side of the foot.

Sixty-one days out of Valparaiso and the cat had got into the rum again. Old Pettifer swore it was the cook's doing, but I'd watched the striped brute climb the mainmast ratlines in a gale and come down grinning, so I knew better than to blame anyone but the cat.

The ship was the Halcyon Marrow, bound for the Cape with a hold of tin ingots and a captain who had stopped speaking to the navigator somewhere off the Horn. Nobody aboard could agree on where we were. The chart said one thing, the compass another, and the cat sat on the binnacle with its tail curled, watching us argue as if it had money riding on the outcome.
On the sixty-second morning the mate, Hollis, came up from the forepeak white as flour and said the cat had told him the Cape lay behind us. We laughed until he pointed at the wake. There was a lantern in it, bobbing, and a voice calling for a line. It was a longboat from a ship we had passed three weeks before, rowing the same muddled course we were. So we steered by the cat. Where its grin pointed, we went, and when it yawned we changed tack. Every man aboard knew it was madness. The captain tapped his pipe on the rail and said a ship full of lunatics had at least the decency to get somewhere. On the seventy-first morning the cliffs of Table Mountain rose out of the haze exactly where the grin had said they would.
I still have the tally I scratched on the galley door, one stroke for each day. At the bottom, in Hollis's careful hand, is the line the cat had been saying all along: we're all mad here. Beneath it he added the date, and beneath that, smaller, a single stripe.
