You will not believe the new lodger in number seven. He arrived on Tuesday with a tin trunk full of sea glass and a hatbox he will not let the girl dust. He takes his breakfast standing up, reads the tide tables aloud as though they were a serial, and has told Mrs Pardoe that the bay is perfectly sane but the gulls are not. When I asked him what he did for a living he said he was a cartographer of places that have not yet agreed to exist, and then he laughed for nearly a minute.

On Thursday he went down to the front in the rain without a coat and stood at the railings with his hands in his pockets, grinning at the water as if someone had told him a joke he had waited years to hear. I took the umbrella out after him, sure he would catch his death, and he only turned and said, very seriously, "Everyone here is quite mad, Mrs Cole, which is the only comfort the seaside has ever offered." Then he pointed up at the moon, a thin white crescent rising over the groyne, and said it looked exactly like the grin that stays behind after the cat has gone.

I did not know what he meant and I am not sure I want to. But I have started leaving the lamp on in the back parlour for him, and last night I found an ink pot on the sill with a pen beside it. On the back of the rent book, in a slanting, looping hand, he had written WE ARE ALL MAD HERE and drawn that moon above it, all teeth.

Come in August. Bring your good shoes. I will tell you the rest when you are sitting down.
