Cheshire Cat grin and We're All Mad Here on wrist
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a tattoo on the inside of a wrist, showing a crescent shaped Cheshire Cat grin with teeth above the words We're All Mad Here in decorative lettering. The linework is a single even dark ink with no shading, and the image is entirely black and grey. The design is centred on a plain area of skin against a dark background.

Tuesday, 14 March. The lost property shelf at Holmside Junction is holding nine umbrellas, twenty-three unmatched gloves and one biscuit tin with a crescent grin scratched across its lid, which the ledger describes only as "tin, humbugs, no owner." Mr Pryce says the humbugs are his, not that he'd call them humbugs. He came in on the late stopper, asked for the tin by its colour, and when I said the ledger wanted a description he laughed as if I'd told a joke he'd heard before.

He says he lost it on the 11.52 the Thursday before last. He says that train has been running a minute early for three weeks, and nobody at the signal box can say which platform it leaves from. I told him the timetable says what it says. He tapped the tin lid, and the scratches caught the lamplight so the grin seemed to widen by a tooth or two, and he said, "Then the timetable is mad, and so are we, and it's all quite ordinary."
I asked him to sign the claim form. Under Reason for claim he wrote, in pencil, "Everyone on that train was." I didn't argue. Porters have a way of knowing when a thing is simply true.
He took the tin, thanked me, and walked out onto platform two just as the 4.10 pulled in. When I looked again the platform was empty and the stopper was gone, though the signal box swears it never left the sidings. I've written Claimed on the ledger and, beneath it, the only reason I can think of: we're all mad here.
