Weeping willow growing from an open hand

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing of a weeping willow whose trunk and roots grow out of a cupped open hand. The branches hang down in long, drooping strands built from dense, hatched linework and cross-hatching. The image is black ink on cream sketchbook paper, with a black marker pen lying diagonally across the top right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow has been falling on the Coldharbour since Tuesday, and by Thursday the yard gate is a white hump you cannot see past. You stand at the kitchen hatch with a tea towel over your shoulder, counting the bread rolls the carrier did not bring, and Mrs Pardoe asks you again whether the willow by the well is still alive under all that weight.

It is. You checked on Monday, before the drifts closed the path. Its branches hang to the cobbles like the hair of a woman bent over a basin, and the old story says that a palm which holds out something for long enough will grow a tree. Nobody in the valley believes it. Still, the innkeeper's grandfather planted the sapling in his own cupped hand the winter he lost his brother on the pass, and the thing has grown ever since out of his fingers, roots threading down between the knuckles into the stone.

On the third night a stranger knocks, shaking, with a satchel full of pens and a sketchbook soaked through at the corners. She wants a bed, and she wants to know why the branches fall the way they do. You tell her the tree is only holding what it was given. She draws it anyway by candlelight, the strokes fine and close as rain, and in the morning she leaves the book open on the table with the roots drawn tight around the hand.

When the thaw comes the gate opens onto a valley full of meltwater, and the willow is greener than you remember, its strands lifting in the first wind. You find the sketchbook still on the table, the page turned to face the door. Beneath the drawing she has written a single line in pencil: it does not let go, it only keeps the rain off. You fold the page into your apron pocket and go out to see whether the tree has dropped its first leaf.
