Botanical · Mixed · Flash

A black line drawing of a weeping willow tree with drooping, feathery branches and exposed roots at the base, shown in profile against a plain yellow background. The linework is fine and even, with hatching used to suggest the foliage and trunk. Below the tree, a caption in purple and black text reads that the willow tattoo symbolises strength and nurturing nature.

The truck stops hitting the gravel at the last bend before Calder Wells, and you climb down into air that tastes of hot iron. The willow is the first thing you see. Nobody plants willows out here. They want their feet in water, and the nearest water is a brackish seep forty miles back, but there it stands beside the empty filling station, its long branches combed down over a cracked concrete trough as if it were reaching the ground for something it had dropped.

The station keeper, a man called Oswin Pardoe with a face like a dried apricot, tells you it came up from a cutting someone carried in a bucket of creek water during the drought of his childhood. Nobody remembers who. He says the roots went down past the water table, through the caliche and the old bones of the sea, and found something nobody else could reach. Then he hands you a jerrycan and says the tank is for the tree, not for the road.

You fill the trough while the sun drops behind the ridge, and the leaves drag cool shadows across your hands. Standing there, you understand the tree has been drinking the dark for longer than the station has existed, and it has never once asked the sand for permission.

When you pull away, you glance back in the mirror. The branches hang over the trough like a curtain drawn against the wind, patient, holding the one thing the desert could not take.
