The man in the blue van came back on Tuesday, just as he said he would, though I had put money on him not bothering. He parked under the tamarisk by the water tank and sat on the tailgate for an hour with a tin of pencils and a sheet of greaseproof paper, drawing circles inside circles the way a child draws a wheel. When I asked what he was making, he said a map of getting back to where you started. I told him the road out there has no maps worth the paper.

He had been driving the Kessel road since spring, selling ointments to the pump stations and collecting the names of places that had stopped having names. Every time the wind came up off the flats he lost a sheet. Once he chased one three miles and came back with it pinned to his shirt like a medal, the red and gold rings smudged to pink.

Yesterday he left a drawing on my counter under a jar of lemon drops. A ring of purple with gold dots along it, and at the centre a red and yellow shape split in two, one half chasing the other's tail. Round the outside, ribbons of blue and green curled off like heat rising from the tarmac. Underneath, in pencil, he had written: for when the wind takes the rest.

I have it pinned above the till now. Come in August, when the road's shut and the coffee's free.
