Whale and geometric circles on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large whale runs vertically along the forearm, with its tail at the top and its pale, ridged belly toward the wrist, shaded in black, grey and dotted stippling. Behind it sit a red latticed sphere, a pink disc, and flat teal and orange circles, with a thin black circle and a vertical black line cutting across the composition. The colour is applied in soft, translucent washes against the heavier black linework of the whale.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The whale came past the harbour wall every spring, always on the ebb, with a line of barnacles along her back like stitches. Nobody in Pellow Cove had given her a name, because nobody wanted to be the one who talked to a whale. Maud Trevena, who kept the chart room above the chandler's, drew her anyway.

She ruled the sea into squares with a brass compass and the steel ruler her father had left her, pencilling a grid over the bay until the paper looked like mending net. Where the lines crossed she marked a dot. Where a dot had a whale above it she inked a ring. By the third summer the rings made a rough circle round Gull Rock, and the boys on the lifeboat slip said it was the nearest thing to a sun the town had.

In August a surveyor from the Admiralty came in a grey saloon and asked to see the charts. He laughed at the rings until he saw the orange disc she had painted for the tide and the teal one for the fog. He said nothing about the black line she had drawn straight down through the middle, from the church spire to the water, which was the only honest thing on the page.

That autumn the whale rose inside the smallest ring, lifted her tail once and went under. Maud folded the chart, put it in the drawer beside her father's ruler, and took the boat out herself to find the next one.
