White cartoon cat in gold frame with quote banners
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A white cartoon cat with a pink bow is shown in three-quarter view inside an ornate gold scrollwork frame set with small jewel-like studs. Two pink ribbon banners carry the script 'Ladies don't start fights' and 'but they can finish them' across the design. Bold outlines, soft shading and a teal-green background give it a vivid colour palette, with the composition centred on the thigh.

By the time Mrs Pryce had her apron off, the kipper was already gone from the stove and the whole back kitchen had heard the wrong tomcat yowling on the step. It was the ginger one from the chandlery, Bramble, and he had got the notion that the white cat sleeping on the sill in the front room was fair game for his temper. He had been at it since Tuesday, flicking his tail past her window, telling anyone who would listen that she was a parlour pet with a ribbon for a heart.

Dorothea never once started anything. She kept her pink bow tied just so, washed one paw at a time, and let him spit at the glass. The fishermen on the quay had seen it all week and laid bets on him. Every morning he came closer to the step, and every morning she only blinked at him slowly, as if he were a bit of weather she would wait out.
On Friday he made his move on the wet cobbles, right under the net-loft, with half the harbour watching. She stepped down from the sill as calm as a magistrate, rose on her hind legs, and tapped him once beneath the chin. He went sideways into the herring crate, then straight up, then over the rail with a noise like a dropped kettle. Nobody needed a second look at her after that.
Mrs Pryce scolded her all the way up the stairs and then slipped a sardine onto the sill when she thought no one was looking. Dorothea ate it neatly, retied the bow, and went back to watching the harbour, where a small ginger head was still bobbing in the shallows and thinking better of the chandlery steps.
