Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A white cartoon cat with a pink bow and teal eyes sits inside a lilac heart framed by ornate gold scrollwork, pearl dots and a teal gem at the top. Bold black outlines define the cat and frame, with soft shading on the heart and fur, and the piece is finished with dotted chain lines ending in pink drops. The tattoo is shown in colour on the outer thigh against a pale blue backdrop.

The pearls had lived in a biscuit tin on the landing for forty years, and Pilar Mint decided, on the third morning of watching it, that nobody in the house would miss one strand if it went down the stairs with proper care. She hooked the lid with a claw, drew the strand out in a long swag, and walked it down the banister, one pearl bouncing ahead of her on each step like a small grey moon going the wrong way.

Dunstan Vell kept the pawnshop on the corner of Hope Street, under a sign that had lost its second O years ago and never got it back. He took the strand under his lamp, rolled each pearl between finger and thumb, and said nothing for so long that Pilar sat on the glass counter beside a tray of wristwatches and washed one white paw with great dignity.
"These are real," he said at last. "Your lady has been telling people they're paste since her wedding, I'd guess."
Pilar considered this. She had heard the old woman say it on the telephone once, in the voice people use for a husband who has been dead a long time. Dunstan offered her a fair price in a brown envelope and a fish-shaped sweet for the road. She took the sweet. She left the envelope, and she left the teal stone from the clasp in the bottom of the sweet jar, where he would find it when he next reached for a humbug.
The next morning the tin sat on the landing with its lid askew, all eighteen pearls rolled back inside, and one teal stone sitting on the top step, winking up at the old woman as she came out in her dressing gown. She picked it up, held it to the window, and laughed until she had to sit down beside the cat.
