White ink mandala on the back of a hand

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are pressed together, each showing a white ink tattoo of a symmetrical lotus-style mandala with layered petals and fine geometric detailing. The linework is delicate and raised slightly against the skin, with no shading. The image is in natural light with a neutral background, and the two designs mirror each other across the joined hands.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Devi had spent three days on the lotus and it still looked backwards to her. Anand took the chalk-marked agate from her, held it to the lamp and turned it until the petals faced the wrong way, the way they would appear in wax. He told her that everything cut in this workshop was meant for someone else's hand, and that the seal was never meant for the cutter to admire.

He had cut the pair himself thirty years before, for a grain merchant and his younger brother, who signed contracts on opposite banks of the river. Each stone carried half of a mandala, so that when both were pressed into a single lump of clay the lotus closed like a bud at dusk. The brother died of fever the spring after. The merchant kept one stone wrapped in linen and never used it again. The other he sent back to Anand with instructions to sell it to a stranger who would not ask where the other half had gone.

Devi asked why he had never sold it. Anand did not answer at once. He pressed his own palm into a tray of wet clay, lifted it, and then set the seal into the same place so the petals settled into the print of his skin as if they had always belonged there. Then he pushed the tray across the bench toward her, where a second lump waited beside a single damp impression.

She finished the stone that night by oil lamp. In the morning she laid the two clay tablets edge to edge on the bench, and the lotus opened across the seam, its petals meeting in the middle. Anand said nothing. He only pressed his thumb against the join, smoothing the line until neither side could be told apart from the other.
