White ink mandala on two hands
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are pressed together, showing matching mandala-style designs in white ink on the backs of the hands. Each design has a rose-like centre surrounded by layered geometric petals and fine dotted detailing. The white linework is subtle against the skin tone, and the composition is close and centred on the hands.

The road out of Ashfield Wells ran white for forty miles, and nobody who drove it at noon trusted their own eyes. Old Mother Haddi sat at the fuel stop with a pot of chalk paste and a fine bone pen, and she would draw on any two people who asked, so long as they were leaving together.

Tom Varley and his cousin Nell asked her in the spring, when the dust lay low and the stone well had not yet cracked. She traced a flower on the back of each of their hands, layered petals and dots fine as grit, then bent the two hands together so the roses touched at the knuckle. "Pale ink holds when the sun doesn't," she said. "Keep the roses facing the same way and you'll find each other on the flats."
Halfway across, a crosswind tore the truck door open and Nell went out with it. Tom walked three days along the white ruts with his hand held out before him like a lantern, reading the petals against the glare. Each dune he crested, the rose on his hand seemed lighter, and he began to fear it was fading. On the fourth morning he found a second rose pressed into the sand beside a cactus root, pale and exact, its petals pointing the way he had come, and beneath it Nell's handprint, still warm when he knelt over it.
Back at the fuel stop, Mother Haddi looked at the two hands he laid on her counter and said nothing. She only tapped the chalk pot once, and the lines on both hands darkened, the way a path does when someone has walked it twice.
