White ink roses across shoulder and chest
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The design shows several outlined roses on the shoulder with delicate scrolling foliage and swirls running across the upper chest. The linework is fine and light, rendered in white ink that stands out as pale lines against the skin rather than in black or coloured pigment. The composition follows the curve of the shoulder, with the largest rose sitting at the top of the arm and the smaller flourishes trailing towards the collarbone.

Ada found the salt on the glass before the kettle had boiled, the way she found it most mornings after a north-easter. It climbed the inside of the front windows of Seaview in pale, branching lines, scrolls like the uncurling ends of bracken and, at the corners, roses drawn so finely she could have lifted one off the pane with a fingernail.

Mr Haddow, who had lodged in the back room since Whitsun, came down in his dressing gown and stood beside her without speaking. He had drawn lace patterns for a Nottingham firm until it closed, and he studied the glass the way other men studied the racing form. "Your salt is doing better work than I ever managed," he said at last, and went to fetch his pencils.
She wanted it gone before the guests saw. Her husband had wanted the same thing the winter he came in off the Hetty Ann with frost in his eyebrows, swearing the sea had been knitting him a shroud. She had laughed at him then. After the funeral she had kept the front room shut and let the windows go grey. But Haddow sat on the step with his tracing paper and copied one rose, petal by petal, and when he held it up to the light the petals overlapped exactly as the ones on the brass bell in the hall did, a thing she had never once noticed in forty years.
By nine the sun had taken the lines. Haddow folded his tracing into his breast pocket and said the bloom would come back on the next wind. Ada found she had put her cloth away without using it, and that she was listening for the north-east the way she had once listened for the boat.
