White ink snowflake on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A six-armed snowflake is tattooed in white ink on the inner forearm, with the wrist visible at the top of the frame. The branches are drawn in thin, slightly textured lines with small side arms and inner geometric detail at the centre. The image is warm-toned and the white ink shows as a pale, low-contrast design against the skin.

The ewes had to be fed before light, and the ice on the trough cracked like a pane when you broke it with the heel of your boot. Your father had always said a farm in January was only a long argument with the weather, and you had never once seen him win it. This morning the frost had furred every fence wire white, and the lane to the top field was a grey ribbon you could barely make out past the gate.

The lamb was in the far pen, curled against the hurdle, too weak to lift its head. You knelt in the straw and held it while the old woman from the cottage at the crossroads, who had delivered half the valley's calves, rubbed warm water into its legs with a rag. She did not speak. She only nodded at the window, where a flake had landed on the glass and sat there, six-armed and perfect, before the heat of your breath dissolved it.

You went out again at dusk with a torch and a bucket. The snow had started in earnest, and every flake that touched your sleeve left a small clean star that held for a breath before it was gone. At the top field gate you stopped and looked back. The lamb was on its feet, wobbling toward the ewe, and the lane behind you had already vanished under white, so that the only way home now was the way you had walked.
