White mandala tattoo on upper back

Geometric · Back · Colour · Photo

A woman lies face down on white bedding, with her hair covering her face and her bare upper back in view. A small, symmetrical white mandala with radiating petal-like shapes sits between the shoulder blades. The design appears to be white ink or a temporary white design, and it stands out against the tanned skin and the white sheets.

Dear Nell,

The pattern came back from the printers with the centre pricked a hair too wide, so I have spent three nights at the cushion undoing spokes by lamplight. Every petal wants twelve pairs of bobbins and not one more. I pinned the card to the pillow the way Mother did and worked the ground around it until the white thread lay flat as frost on a sheet.

What I did not tell you on the telephone is that the old drawing came from the tin that belonged to Miss Rowe, who taught me to tat before I could read properly. Tucked under the lid was a scrap in her hand: 'Make the rose for whoever sleeps face down. It keeps the dreams from sliding off.' I laughed at that when I was twelve. I am not laughing now. I have slept on the far side of the bed since your grandfather went, and some nights the cold comes up through the mattress and settles between my shoulders, and I lie very still and count petals.

The lace is finished. I sewed the last picot at four this morning with the window open and the milk float rattling down the lane. I have wrapped the mandala in tissue and put it in the blue biscuit tin with the cracked lid, and I am posting it to you on Thursday. Have it inked on your skin if you like, or framed above the bed, I do not mind which. Just keep it away from damp.

Your loving Gran, Ada
