Metallic geometric temporary tattoos on thigh and hand

Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a bare upper leg showing a vertical stack of gold, silver and black rectangular blocks and a horizontal band of gold chevrons above the knee. A small gold chevron mark is visible on the back of a hand resting on a grey knitted blanket. The designs look like metallic temporary tattoos, with flat metallic ink and no shading, and the soft warm lighting and neutral bedding keep the composition calm.

The last tent of Hollis and Dunn's Travelling Wonder had seventeen patches on its north wall, and every one was cut from a different colour of canvas. Old Maud Hollis said that was the trouble with the show. Nobody had ever bought the same cloth twice.

When the bank in Carlisle took the wagons, the ringmaster sold the striped pennants, the brass horn and the lion's cage, but he could not sell the gold braid. It was a long ribbon of chevrons that ran round the centre pole, sewn there by a rope-walker called Ines who had crossed the Eden gorge in her stockings. The braid was too heavy to carry and too bright to leave, so the men hung it up in the empty tent and argued about it all winter.

In March a boy came up the road with a bag of tin-foil stars and a cart of chipped blocks, and asked for work. Maud gave him a needle. He sewed the blocks in a column down the centre pole, silver, gold, black, gold, and when the frost came the braid began to lift at the corners. He told them each chevron pointed the way the wind had gone the day Ines fell, and that a show could only leave a town by following them.

They opened in April with one lamp and no animals. A dozen farmers paid a penny each to stand in the sawdust and look up. Nobody asked where the boy had gone, though his needle was still stuck in the centre pole, and the gold chevrons still pointed east.
