Wild and free script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of the words wild and free written in a joined, cursive script across a pale forearm. The thin, even black linework has a delicate, handwritten quality, with the ampersand sitting between the two words. The background is softly blurred, with a striped fabric on the right and a pale wall on the left.

Dear Mags, the tide came in over the causeway again last night and I had to wade the last bit with the lamp oil on my shoulder, so forgive the state of this paper. Father says the stores boat won't come before Thursday, which means we are living on tinned peaches and his opinions. I have started writing the names of the boats on the back of the tide tables just to have something to do with my pencil.

You asked in your last letter whether I was lonely out here. I am not, not in the way you mean. There is the gull that sits on the rail every morning as if it pays rent, and the seal who has taken to following the dinghy and watching me row with the grave look of a magistrate. Yesterday I wrote the words I keep thinking of in the sand above the high water mark, in my best loopy hand, and then I stood and read them while the sea took them one letter at a time. Wild and free, joined up, with the little ampersand between like a handshake. By the time I got to the f the w had gone.

Father saw me doing it and said nothing, which for him is practically a sermon. Tonight he has left the lamp window unshuttered for me, and I can see the light sweeping the water in its slow arc, going round and round and never once leaving the rock it was built for. I think that is the trick of it. You can be bound to a place and still send your words out past the edge of it. Come and visit in the summer. Bring ink. The sand here is not reliable.
