Wildflower bouquet with roots on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bouquet of wildflowers, including poppy-like blooms, daisies and buds, rises from a tangle of roots at the bottom of the forearm. The design uses black linework with fine hatching and light shading on the petals and stems. The composition is vertical and centred on the arm, with the flowers spreading toward the top of the frame against a plain red background.

Dear Marjorie,

The platform at Harrowgate Cross has been shut since the footbridge came down in March, so the wildflowers have had the place to themselves. Poppies came first, then the chicory, then the daisies that nobody planted. Mr Oakes from the signal box says the roots go down past the ballast into the old coal dust, which is why his spray never touched them. I went down yesterday with my trowel and a paper bag, meaning to lift a few for your window box.
I got as far as the third clump before I saw what was holding them. Under the chicory the earth was full of pale threads, and when I pulled gently a whole plant came up with a knot of root the size of a fist, bruised at the ends and branching like the veins of a leaf. Mr Oakes says his father used to tell him a railway line is only a long root that somebody forgot to tell where to stop.
I put the poppy back. I didn't take a single bloom. The train from Leeds still hasn't come, but on Thursday there was a new bud on the second stem, opening in the middle of the rails, and I thought you would want to know that something is still growing on a line nobody uses.
Write soon, and bring the good scissors. Love, Ada
