Pansy and blossom design on an elbow

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A radial floral design of three purple pansies with yellow centres, three small peach blossoms and green leaves with fine black stems. Bold black outlines define the flowers and foliage, with soft colour shading inside the petals and leaves. The design is centred on the elbow and spreads outward over the forearm against a black sleeve.

Dearest Nell, the pansies you sent in the tin came through the Cape heat better than I had any right to expect. I have pressed them between the pages of Mr Fenwick's almanac, three purple faces with their little yellow eyes, and laid the peach blossoms round them the way Mother used to arrange the dinner plates, so the whole thing opens outward like a clock someone has forgotten to wind.

Fenwick says I am wasting good paper. He is the ship's carpenter and believes anything not useful for knots or hinges to be vanity. Last night he sat on the hatch and watched me trim the stems with my embroidery scissors, and then he asked, very gruffly, whether I might spare one for his sister in Plymouth. I said she could have the whole centre if she promised to write back, which he took as a joke, though he did not laugh.

We are four weeks from Fremantle now, and the light on the water has gone the colour of weak tea. The men have started calling the stern gallery the parlour because I read there in the evenings. Yesterday a deckhand I barely know brought me a sprig of samphire from the galley crate and asked if it would press. I told him anything would press if you were patient enough with it.

I will send this with the next pilot boat if we pass one. Keep the letters, Nell, even the dull ones. When I come home I want to lay all of them out on your kitchen table in order and see whether the pattern holds from the middle outward.
