Wildflower sprig on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows two photographs of the same kind of tattoo: a slender wildflower sprig with a thin stem, small clustered blossoms and a few leaves. The left photo shows the design placed vertically along the side of the ribs, with plenty of empty skin around it. The right photo is a closer view where the blossoms and stem are shaded in soft greys with fine, delicate linework.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lavender came up along the lane behind the lock-keeper's cottage the same week the water rose, and Mabel Trewin cut the first spike with the bread knife because the good shears had gone missing again. She laid it between two pages of the parish register, where it would keep, and wrote the date in pencil in the margin the way her mother had taught her, so that anyone opening the book later would know the flower had been picked on a Thursday and not a Sunday.

Her brother Tom came down from the top field at dusk with the mule and said the lock gate was sticking again. She told him it had been sticking since their father died, and that a sprig of something cut from a hedge would not mend it. He looked at the pressed flower in the register and said nothing, which was how Tom agreed to things.

The next morning the gate was free. Nobody could say who had worked the hinge loose with a lever and a little grease, and Mabel did not ask. She only walked the towpath to the bridge with the register under her arm and found a single stem growing from a crack in the stone, grey-leaved and thin, its small clustered heads already fading to the colour of dust. She knelt, cut it, and pressed it in beside the first, so that the two sprigs lay side by side on the page like a pair of people waiting to be introduced.
