Wing tattoo across a shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a person's bare upper back and shoulder, with a large feathered wing tattooed across the shoulder blade. The feathers are shaded in soft greys with fine strokes that define individual plumes. The pale, out-of-focus background contrasts with the dark, wavy hair that falls across the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mam kept the goose quills in a biscuit tin under the stairs, and the carrier from Hollin Ford always asked whether they came from the grey geese on the mere. I was eleven the winter the wood at the edge of Cotterby lost its owl. I was the one who found what was left of it in the bracken, one wing folded like a letter nobody had finished.

I carried it home under my jumper. Mam did not scold. She laid it on the kitchen table beside the lamp and we counted the primaries together, ten along the outer edge, each one barred with grey where the light had got into it. She said a wing like that was not made to be looked at, only trusted. Then she set me down with a dish of soot and a fine brush and told me to show her what I could do with shading.

All spring I drew feathers on every scrap of paper the vicar would spare. The first ones looked like fish scales. The later ones leaned into the air as if they meant to leave the page. By the time the hawthorn came out I could lift a plume off the paper with three strokes and a smudge of my thumb. Mam took the best sheet down to the cobbler in Hollin Ford and never told me what he said about it.

In autumn the carrier came back with a parcel in brown paper and no name on it. Inside was a wooden box lined with felt, and folded flat in it was a grey pinion, copied so exactly from my drawing that I could not tell ink from bone. Mam put her hand over her mouth. I kept it in the biscuit tin with the quills, and every time the wind moved through the wood I went to the window and listened for the owl.
