Realistic feathered wing on shoulder and upper arm
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large feathered wing is tattooed across the shoulder and upper arm, with individual primary and covert feathers shaded in layered greys and black. The linework and shading give the feathers depth and a soft gradient from the shoulder blade down to the lower edge. The photograph is taken from behind with soft, neutral lighting against a pale background, and only part of the subject's hair and lower face is visible at the top of the frame.

The barn owl came down into the lower field the week the ewes started lambing, and my father said it was an omen of nothing except more work. He had feed sacks to count and the trailer to hitch, and he had no time for birds that hunted in daylight. I found it on the threshing floor of the old barn that Tuesday, one wing folded wrong beneath it, its face the colour of frost on a gate.

I carried it into the tack room and wrapped it in a feed sack while the snow came sideways past the window. Mum said it would have died anyway, and she was probably right, but that didn't stop me spending the afternoon with a biro and the back of an invoice, trying to draw the feathers the way they must have lain when the bird was alive. The long primaries stepped down like the rungs of a ladder. The coverts overlapped like slates on the cart shed roof, each one darker at the tip than at the root.
When the thaw came I buried the body under the damson tree, but I kept the wing. The joint had set stiff, so I worked the ten longest flight feathers loose and laid them on a sheet of card to dry. Dad came in while I was sorting them by length and stood in the doorway a long time without speaking. Then he took the lamp from its hook and held it steady so I could see the grey on the underside, pale as a February sky.
"It kept the mice out of the feed for six years," he said at last. I didn't answer. I left the lamp burning after he went to bed, and the feathers turned slowly in its light, as if they had only been waiting for the wind to change.
