Winged banner design on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of feathered wings wraps up the forearm, with ribbon-like banners curling through the lower feathers. The feathers are shaded with soft grey gradients and darker outlines, and the banners carry small lettering that is not legible in this photo. The image is taken at an angle from the side, with the arm filling the centre of the frame against a wooden floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferryman's daughter kept the wing-feathers of the herons that nested in the broken walls of Harrowgate Keep, and she sold them by the bundle to the lamplighters in the town below. Every spring the birds came back to the same ledges, and every spring she climbed the old stair with a basket on her hip and counted the nests before she touched a single feather.

One March the herons did not come. The ledges stayed bare, and the river ran brown and quick under the arch. She went up anyway, because the banners were still tied to the iron rings where her grandmother had hung them, grey strips of cloth gone soft as ash, and the wind kept lifting them as though something below wanted to be read. The letters on them had faded past reading. She sat on the top step and tried to make out a name, and gave up, and the wind took one of the strips and wound it three times round her wrist before letting go.

She came down at dusk with no feathers in the basket. At the ferry she told her father the herons had gone north, and he nodded and said that was how it was with herons, they kept their own counsel. That night she dreamed of a long grey wing folding over the keep like a sleeve, and in the morning there were feathers on the stair, pale and fresh, laid in a line from the gate to the water.

She gathered every one. She sold none of them.
