Winged heart brooch and stars on chest
Neo-trad · Chest · Colour · Photo
A golden heart-shaped brooch with feathered wings and pink jewelled centres sits at the centre of the chest, framed by a pale blue burst of light. Two red five-pointed stars sit on either side, with fine black cobweb linework extending over the shoulders. Bold dark outlines and smooth shading give the colour work a clean, graphic finish.

The spider had been working at the east window since Michaelmas, and by the time two red stars came down through the broken roof of Hollin Scar, her web hung from the sill to the sconce like a sheet nobody had asked for. Ebba, the keeper's girl, was sitting on the flags with her grandmother's brooch in her lap, polishing the gold heart with the hem of her apron. The stars landed in the ashes of the hearth, small as dolls and sharp as needles, and asked her what she wished for.

She told them the wind. It came in through the roof every night and took the candles and the bread and once the cat, and her father had given up mending anything. The taller star frowned at the brooch and said the wind was not a thing that could be asked, only answered. The brooch was a call, she said, and a call needed a pair of wings to go out on. So Ebba unfolded the gold wings and held the pink stone to the light, and a blue burst went up through the rafters like a struck bell.
The wind came. It came all night and into the morning, and when it had finished it had taken the roof with it. Ebba woke in the open courtyard under a sky the colour of cold milk. Her father was shouting from the gatehouse. The brooch lay on the stones beside her, its wings folded flat again, and the two red stars were gone. In the east window the spider's web had come through the storm whole, and every thread of it was beaded with dew, so that in the first sun it caught the light like a row of tiny jewels, and Ebba thought she had never seen a finer thing built in one night.
