Cupcake with diamond and bow on chest

Neo-trad · Chest · Colour · Photo

A pink-frosted cupcake sits at the centre of the design, with a faceted blue diamond on top and small red hearts and blue diamonds scattered across the frosting. The cupcake wrapper is yellow with black dots and is tied with a large red bow. Bold dark outlines and smooth shading give the piece a clean, vivid look against the skin.

Sit closer, mind, the wind off the Sound likes to listen in and it steals the best bits if you let it. Mairead Tulloch kept the only oven on Scarrow for forty winters, and every one of them she iced the same way: pink and piled high, like a wave that had thought better of breaking.

The February the lamp-keeper's boy came up the hill with a blue stone in his fist, she didn't ask where he'd got it. It had come up in a crab pot, he said, cut clean as an ice sheet with the sun behind it. His father had gone out in January and not come back, and the boy wanted a cake for his mother, something that looked like it had cost a fortune. Mairead had no sugar for such a thing, so she pressed a fistful of red hearts from her mother's tin and scattered them through the frosting like a summer dropped on the table, and she set the stone on top like a crown.

She wrapped it in yellow paper with black dots, the cheapest the mainland boat would bring, and tied a red ribbon round it in a bow as big as a gull. A plain cake, she told him, is only food. A bow tells the person it was made for them.

His mother ate her slice standing at the window with the sea going grey beyond it, and said nothing at all, which on Scarrow is the loudest thanks there is. The stone she kept in a jar on the sill. Every spring after, when the boats came back, the boy brought Mairead a fresh stone from the pots, and she never once asked him where he'd found it.
