Winged heart with halo and Always Remembered
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a single-line outline of a heart with spiral curls at its top, a halo above, and a pair of feathered angel wings on either side. Above the heart, the wings are drawn with simple outlines and teardrop-shaped feather marks, while the script words Always Remembered sit beneath in flowing cursive. The ink is solid black on pale skin, shot straight on with the design centred in the frame.

By the third week of August the Bramley by the lane was so heavy it leaned on its own prop, and Dad said we'd pick it before the wasps did. My job was the high branches. I carried the wooden ladder through the long grass with its rungs knocking against my hip, and I hung the picking bag from my shoulder the way Mum had shown me, so the weight sat on the bone and not on the arm.

Dad had planted that tree the spring after Nan died, a whip no taller than the fence post, and he had never once let anyone prune it into shape. It grew crooked and generous. Every August it dropped fruit in clusters, and every August he stood beneath it with his hands in his pockets, counting the windfalls the way other men count change.
That afternoon he didn't count. He sat on an upturned tub with a carpenter's pencil and wrote on the lid of the last crate, in the square capitals he used for the honey labels. Then he stopped and added something smaller underneath. I asked what it said. He tilted the lid so I could see: a heart with curls at its top, the way Nan drew them in the margins of shopping lists, and a small ring above it, pressed in hard with the point.
We loaded the van at dusk. The crate went on top, and the lid went face down under the apples so the juice would soak through the pencil and take it away. Dad said that was the right place for it. I thought he was wrong, and I still walk past that tree every August to check it is standing.
