A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tobias Quarry had nailed shoes to horses for thirty-one years on Hallam Lane, and he had never once been asked to shoe a thing that wanted to leave. The grey mare came in past midnight, when the rain had stopped and the gutters along the cobbles were still running. Her owner, a man in a wax coat who would not give his name, said only that she had been listening to the trains.

Tobias heated the iron until it went the colour of a late plum, then bent it over the horn. He punched the nail holes by feel, counting under his breath the way his father had taught him. When he lifted the mare's near fore to test the fit, the shoe was warm and light as bread, and along its curve a row of feathers had pushed up through the scale like new grass, dark at the tips and ash grey at the root.

He should have sent them away. Instead he rang the bell for the night porter at the station and asked him to hold the gate. The mare stood very still. Then she lifted her head toward the rooftops over the canal, and the feathers lifted with her, and for a moment the shoe was no longer something he had made but something that had made him, tugging at the bones of his wrists the way a kite tugs at a child.

By morning the forge was cold and the man in the wax coat was gone. Tobias found a single feather on the anvil, long as his forearm, and pinned it above the door where the first light came in grey over the chimney pots. Every night since, he has heard hooves on the slates, and every night he leaves the gate open.
